OUR HISTORY

Since 2002, Hyosarangus Mission has been dedicated to helping seniors, families, and the next generation discover their God-given identity through Christian education, community service, and missions. The following timeline highlights the major milestones of our ministry.

2002

June 15
Positive Church was established at 1400 San Antonio Drive, Norwalk, California 90650.

August 15
Positive Church's Filial Duty Mission was officially registered as a nonprofit organization.

October 15
The Inaugural Worship Service and Celebration of the Filial Duty Mission (Hyo-do Mission) was held.

November 7
Weekly nursing home ministry began at Paramount Nursing Home and has continued to serve senior residents through worship, fellowship, and compassionate care.

 

2003

March 2
Senior Filial Piety University opened its two-year educational program with an enrollment of 65 senior students.

May 11
Hosted the 2nd International Mother's Day Celebration for more than 300 multicultural senior citizens at the Norwalk Senior Center, featuring recreational performances and cultural presentations.

May 13
Held the International Mother's Day Celebration at the Norwalk Senior Center, bringing together over 300 participants from diverse cultural backgrounds to celebrate Korean traditions and honor senior adults.

May 30
Received a Certificate of Appreciation from Eddie Ramirez, Recreation Coordinator for the City of Norwalk, in recognition of outstanding community service.

 

2004

April 18
Received a Certificate of Appreciation from Andrew Litchman, Administrator of Paramount Convalescent Hospital, for dedicated volunteer ministry.

November 14
Held a Thanksgiving Worship Service and Fellowship Event at Paramount Nursing Home to encourage and bless senior residents.

 

2005

May 9
Hosted the 3rd International Mother's Day Celebration for more than 300 multicultural senior citizens at the Norwalk Senior Center.

July 27
Celebrated the graduation of the first 12 students from Senior Filial Piety University, with graduates wearing traditional academic caps and gowns.

September 9
Opened the second class of Senior Filial Piety University with 62 newly enrolled senior students.

September 16
Conducted a Chuseok Thanksgiving Worship Service at Paramount Nursing Home.

 

2006

May 6
Held the Senior Filial Piety University Outdoor Worship Service.

August 1
Launched free community health screenings every Saturday to promote health and wellness among local residents.

November 30
Successfully completed a four-month Free Medical Care Program for members of the local community.

 

2007

June 24
Held the graduation ceremony for the second class of Senior Filial Piety University, honoring 11 graduates.

September 9
Launched a free After-School Program to promote filial piety education for elementary school students.

December 1
Participated in the 3rd Regional Joint Scholarship Program, awarding scholarships to 23 underprivileged multicultural students.

 

2008

December 4
Awarded scholarships to 22 underprivileged multicultural students as part of the 4th Annual Scholarship Program.

 

2009

November 16
Launched the first Family Relationship Restoration Program, with 25 families participating in a four-day program over two weeks to strengthen family relationships and promote healthy communication.

December 11
Completed the second session of the Family Relationship Restoration Program.

December 13
Awarded scholarships to 21 underprivileged multicultural students.

 

2010

March 10
Launched the Filial Piety Campaign with a special worship service, encouraging biblical values of honoring parents and strengthening family relationships.

November 28
Awarded scholarships to 22 underprivileged multicultural students.

December 15
Successfully concluded the Free After-School Program, which had provided character education and promoted the value of filial piety among elementary school students.

 

2011

March 28
Relocated the Filial Duty Mission office to Buena Park, California.

September 21
Officially changed the organization's name from Filial Duty Mission (Hyo-do Mission) to Hyosarangus Mission and completed nonprofit registration under the new name.

November 28
Awarded scholarships to 23 underprivileged multicultural students.

Received a Certificate of Appreciation from Carol K. Chen, Mayor of the City of Cerritos, in recognition of outstanding community service.

December 28
Published and distributed the first 5,000 copies of the Hyosarangus Mission promotional booklet.

 

2012

February 4
Opened a U.S. Citizenship Class at Jesus Vision Church.

April 22 – May 9
Presented a special drama ministry to encourage seniors living alone at:

  • Na Sung Young Nak Church (April 22)

  • Hana Church (April 29)

  • Irvine Baptist Church (May 9)

November 9
Held the 8th Annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony, awarding scholarships to 25 underprivileged multicultural students.

 

2013

July 15
Opened registration for the 1st American Youth Filial Piety Writing & Drawing Contest.

September 14
Held the 1st American Youth Filial Piety Writing & Drawing Contest Awards Ceremony, recognizing 54 students with certificates and awards.

December 2
Awarded scholarships to 22 underprivileged multicultural students.

December 3
Received a Certificate of Appreciation from the ABC Unified School District Superintendent.

 

2014

February 4
Opened a U.S. Citizenship Class at Hyosarangus Mission in Buena Park.

March 23
Received the Community Service Award from California State Assemblymember Sharon Quirk-Silva.

April 20
Opened registration for the 2nd American Youth Filial Piety Writing & Drawing Contest.

June 7
Held the 2nd Annual American Youth Filial Piety Writing & Drawing Contest Awards Ceremony, honoring 66 students with certificates and prizes.

California State Assemblymember Sharon Quirk-Silva personally presented awards to 26 recipients.

December 1
Awarded scholarships to 22 underprivileged multicultural students.

 

2015

June 13
Held the 3rd Annual American Youth Filial Piety Writing & Drawing Contest Awards Ceremony, recognizing 104 students with certificates and prizes.

U.S. Representative Young Kim personally presented awards to the participants.

July 9
Opened the 3rd Class of Hyosarang Senior College following the organization's name change.

November 30
Awarded scholarships to 22 underprivileged multicultural students.

 

2016

June 11
Held the 4th American Youth Filial Piety Writing & Drawing Contest Awards Ceremony, recognizing 68 students with certificates and prizes.

California State Assemblymember Young Kim presented the awards and encouraged the participants.

December 5
Awarded scholarships to 22 underprivileged multicultural students.

December 11
Hosted the Parents' Love Praise Festival, featuring performances by nine participating teams.

 

2017

April 22
Held the 5th American Youth Filial Piety Writing & Drawing Contest Awards Ceremony, honoring 56 students with certificates and prizes.

Special guests included:

  • California State Assemblymember Steven Choi

  • California State Assemblymember Sharon Quirk-Silva

  • California State Assemblymember Philip Chen

  • Orange County Supervisor Michelle Steel

June 3
Held the 3rd Graduation Ceremony of Hyosarang Senior College, celebrating the graduation of 22 students.

August 8
Opened the Fall Semester of Hyosarang Senior College.

August 15
Hyosarangus Mission was officially recognized as a Presidential Volunteer Service Award Certifying Organization.

November 26
Twenty-one students graduated from Greenfield Senior Bible College.

Certificates of Appreciation were presented to both graduates and dedicated volunteers.

November 30
Successfully completed the Fall Semester of Hyosarang Senior College.

December 10
Elder Yoo Yong-seok received the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award for volunteer service.

2018

January 16
Opened the Spring Semester of Hyosarang Senior College.

February 24
Hosted the Presidential Volunteer Service Award Ceremony and Orientation in partnership with HEIVN.

Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to Elder Joo Chang-guk and Pastor Lim Young-ho, along with Gold and Bronze Awards for student volunteers.

March 18
Held another Presidential Volunteer Service Award Ceremony honoring four Gold Award recipients.

June 16
Held the 6th American Youth Filial Piety Essay & Drawing Contest Awards Ceremony at Fullerton Presbyterian Church.

A total of 66 students received certificates and awards.

August 4
Hosted another Presidential Volunteer Service Award Ceremony at Saeyoung Church.

One Lifetime Achievement Award and eight Gold Awards were presented.

August 7
Opened the Fall Semester of Hyosarang Senior College.

September 25
Senior College students participated in a two-day short-term mission trip to a nursing home in Ensenada, Mexico.

November 29
Successfully completed the Fall Semester of Hyosarang Senior College.

 

2019

February 5
Opened the Spring Semester of Hyosarang Senior College.

March 14
Senior College students enjoyed a spring excursion to view the poppy flower fields in Lake Elsinore.

April 6
Held the 7th American Youth Filial Piety Writing & Drawing Contest Awards Ceremony, recognizing 65 students with certificates and prizes.

Awards were presented by California State Assemblymember Sharon Quirk-Silva and Orange County Supervisor Michelle Steel.

May 28–29
Senior College students participated in a two-day short-term mission trip to Ensenada, Mexico.

May 29
Successfully completed the Spring Semester of Hyosarang Senior College.

August 6
Opened the Fall Semester of Hyosarang Senior College.

August 21
Presented the Presidential Volunteer Service Award to three adult volunteers.

November 30
Successfully completed the Fall Semester of Hyosarang Senior College.

 

2020

February 1
Opened the Spring Semester of Hyosarang Senior College in Buena Park.

February 28
In-person classes were temporarily suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

August 25
Launched weekly online YouTube classes, allowing seniors to continue learning and staying connected throughout the pandemic.

 

2021

 

April 25
Held the 8th American Youth Identity Writing & Drawing Contest Awards Ceremony, recognizing 57 students (23 writing participants and 34 drawing participants) with certificates and prizes.

May 30
Concluded the weekly online YouTube classes that had served senior adults throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

August 6
Opened the Fall Semester of Hyosarang Senior College with in-person classes in Buena Park.

November 25
Successfully completed the Fall Semester of Hyosarang Senior College.

 

2022

March 6
Opened the Spring Semester of Hyosarang Senior College in Buena Park.

June 18
Held the 9th American Youth Identity Writing & Drawing Contest, with 56 students participating (23 writing and 33 drawing).

Awards and certificates were presented by U.S. Representative Michelle Park Steel.

The 9th Volunteer Service Awards were also presented to 26 student volunteers.

July 5
Successfully completed the Spring Semester of Hyosarang Senior College.

August 13
Opened the Fall Semester of Hyosarang Senior College.

 

2023

February 7
Opened the Spring Semester of Hyosarang Senior College.

April 22
Held the 10th American Youth Identity Writing & Drawing Contest, with 54 students participating.

Awards and certificates were presented by U.S. Representative Young Kim.

May 25
Successfully completed the Spring Semester of Hyosarang Senior College.

June 12–13
Senior College students participated in a short-term mission trip to Ensenada, Mexico.

August 8
Opened the Fall Semester of Hyosarang Senior College.

November 30
Successfully completed the Fall Semester of Hyosarang Senior College.

December 5–6
Conducted another short-term mission trip to Ensenada, Mexico.

December 18
Held the First Rodem Tree Choir Year-End Music Festival.

December 26
Celebrated the Year-End Fellowship and New Year's Gathering with students and volunteers.

 

2024

February 13
Opened the Spring Semester of Hyosarang Senior College.

April 20
Held the 11th American Youth Identity Writing & Drawing Contest, with 77 students participating (33 writing and 44 drawing).

Awards and certificates were presented by U.S. Representative Michelle Park Steel.

May 30
Successfully completed the Spring Semester of Hyosarang Senior College.

June 1
Established the Coram Deo Choir.

June 26–27
Senior College students participated in a short-term mission trip to Ensenada, Mexico.

 

2025

January 6
Held the 2025 New Year's Celebration.

February 11
Opened the Spring Semester of Hyosarang Senior College.

April 26
Held the 12th American Youth Identity Writing & Drawing Contest Awards Ceremony, with 104 students participating.

Certificates and words of encouragement were presented by:

  • California State Assemblymember Sharon Quirk-Silva

Participants were encouraged to grow with biblical values, confidence, and a strong sense of identity in Christ.

May 21–22
A team of 18 Senior College students participated in a short-term mission trip to Ensenada, Mexico, serving at a nursing home, a women's rehabilitation center, and a public elementary school.

May 29
Held the Spring Semester Closing Ceremony and Student Performance Showcase.

July 23–25
Hosted the Senior Summer Vacation Bible School (VBS).

August 12
Opened the Fall Semester of Hyosarang Senior College.

November 25
Held the Fall Semester Closing Ceremony and Student Performance Showcase.

December 2–4
A team of 19 students participated in another short-term mission trip to Ensenada, Mexico.

 

2026

 

January 13
Held the 2026 New Year's Celebration.

February 10
Opened the Spring Semester of Hyosarang Senior College.

February 20–23
A volunteer performance team presented Nanta, Harmonica, and Aerophone performances during the 40th Anniversary Celebration of Tucson–Sierra Vista Korean Presbyterian Church in Arizona.

March 25
Visited the Korean War Veterans Memorial under the guidance of Legislative Aide Dongwoo Park, honoring the sacrifice of American service members and reflecting on Korean heritage and identity.

April 25
Held the 13th American Youth Identity Writing & Drawing Contest Awards Ceremony, with 35 students participating.

Certificates and words of encouragement were presented by:

  • California State Assemblymember Sharon Quirk-Silva

May 28
Held the Spring Semester Closing Ceremony and Student Performance Showcase.

June 9–10
A team of 13 Senior College students participated in a short-term mission trip to Ensenada, Mexico, serving at a nursing home, a women's rehabilitation center, and a public elementary school.

June 20
Held the First Graduation Ceremony of Hyosarang Bible College.

Five students successfully completed the two-year Bible Chronology Program, designed to help participants understand God's redemptive plan through Scripture and strengthen their Christian identity.

Our Mission Continues

For more than two decades, Hyosarangus Mission has faithfully served senior adults, families, and the next generation through Christian education, community outreach, missions, volunteer service, and leadership development.

Our mission remains unchanged:
Sharing the love of Christ, strengthening families, serving our community, and raising future generations with biblical values.
